Music at St. Peter's

Learn more about our music-based programs

Music means so much to us at St. Peter’s.

We use music to connect to God in our services, through beautifully sung hymns and rich organ music.  We also use music to engage our youth through various programs, including a summer theater camp.  Learn more about music at St. Peter’s below.

LEADERSHIP

Dr. Stuart Duncan as our Interim Music Director through September 31, 2024.  Stuart is originally from the South-East of England, has been playing organ and conducting choirs for over two decades.  He holds a Doctorate in music composition from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in music theory from Yale University.

Stuart recently co-authored a book on Music in Prisons entitled “Music-Making in U.S. Prisons: Listening to Incarcerated Voices.” Stuart works at UConn’s Graduate School as their Director of Programming and Diversity Recruitment and at UCONN’s Neag School of Education.

We are thrilled to have Stuart leading our music programs!

PARISH CHOIR

The Parish Choir is a volunteer ensemble that often sings a new anthem each week.  Music reading is not a prerequisite for this ensemble, but it is certainly a skill that will be honed by being a part of the group. We welcome anyone who enjoys singing – even if you can’t commit to all rehearsals! Show up when you can and enjoy singing with others.

Our parish choir is open to all singers ages 17 and upwards. We sing various musical styles throughout the year, ranging from Renaissance motets to Contemporary Spirituals. The Parish Choir is a vibrant, engaged, passionate ministry.  Join us for a rehearsal to give it a try!

We rehearse on Thursdays from 7:00 PM – 8:30 pm, as well as on Sundays after the Rite II service.

DRAMA CAMP

Each summer we offer a week-long drama camp that shares a story from the bible reimagined as a performance featuring music. This experience teaches your child to sing, speak in public, love being in a play, enjoy the company of others, and bloom on stage in a well-organized production. Mornings are rehearsal and after lunch, there is a fun activity.

MUSICAL EQUIPMENT

Our church is blessed with equipment that produces wonderful music for our community.

  • Two interconnected pipe organs:
    • a two-manual Casavant console in the choir loft
    • a two-manual custom console controlling the transept organ
  • Steinway “M” grand piano in the Sanctuary

We also have a well-equipped and dedicated choir room with a substantial choral library.
