Maundy Thursday: Sharing the Grief

Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and agitated. Then he said to them, “I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me.” (Matthew 26:36-38)

Over the last year, we have endured immense collective and personal grief. As Jesus demonstrated in the Garden of Gethsemane, it is good to share this grief in our community, and to pour out our struggles before God.

We invite you to ask yourself “What am I grieving?” If you would like to submit something that has caused you grief this past year, small or large, we will share that grief out loud during a special litany during the Maundy Thursday service. The griefs you submit will be shared anonymously. Please send your thoughts to sandra.stayner@stpeterscheshire.org.

In sharing our grief as a community, we can come to understand that we are not alone, and that God holds us even in our darkest hour, as we await the day of Christ’s coming.
