An Evening with Paula Butterini: Gourmet Meal and Fundraiser

Paula Butterini

From Kyle Pedersen, Our Deacon,
I am writing to let you know about a very special evening Thursday, July
15, 5:30-7:30, at Zinc with Paula Butturini, author of "Keeping the Feast."
All proceeds from this event will benefit the CMHC Foundation, helping people in
recovery live healthy and meaningful lives in the community.

Krista Tippett, host of the public radio program Speaking of Faith, says of the
book:  “A remarkable story, gorgeously told.  We reflect, relish, grieve, and
heal our way with Paula Butturini, who is wise about so many things – family
and place; depression, religion, and love; the disastrous long-term fallout of
a single bullet fired at a loved one; and the immediate restorative pleasures
of an Italian meal.  This book evokes life at its most serious and dire, and at
its most mysterious and delectable.  Read it, and be deepened and refreshed.”

The Advocate Magazine of the National Alliance on Mental Illness recently
featured Butturini's book with this description:  "Paula Butturini, a foreign
correspondent, met her husband John Tagliabue, a reporter for The New York
Times, in Rome in 1985. Less than a month after they were married, John was
shot and nearly killed by a sniper—and for several years one tragedy or
upheaval after another seemed to befall them. John slid into depression at the
same time that Paula’s mother, who had lived with depression when Paula was a
child, relapsed and died from suicide. Together, they found healing through
simple rituals, including the sustaining power of food. The book reconsiders
some assumptions about the healing process (i.e., patience sometimes can be a
vice, anger a virtue and making demands on people who are sick may indeed be
critical to recovery)."

The event on July 15 features Butturini reading from her book and sharing her
experiences of recovery, food and healing. Zinc chef Denise Appel prepares a
light tasting menu of fresh, local summer foods and a complimentary drink.
Books will be available for sale and signing.  Tickets are $50 per person and
are available in advance.  For tickets and more information please contact

Warmest regards,

Kyle
