Kindness 2

The Rev. Ray Andersen
September 17, 2017

Some of you here this morning may have heard my first sermon on kindness and just when you thought it was safe to come back to church, kindness, like the shark in Jaws, has circled around and is coming back for a second bite.

Love is the Only Debt We Owe to God and to One Another

The Rev. Sandra Stayner
September 10, 2017 Pentecost 18

Over the past few weeks we have read stories and seen pictures on TV of 150-mile an hour winds flattening buildings, and knocking down trees. We have watched storm surges and high waves overwhelming sea barriers of every kind, seen buildings submerged as water floods through streets and now we watch the once proud cruise ships fleeing the waves that batter the coast of Florida. These are some of the images we have in our minds as we come together this morning. The surrounding sea is warm resulting in an onslaught of hurricanes never before seen. Will we pay attention to the signs that our globe is in distress? Is there anything we can do to help the situation?

Some Reflections on Charlottesville -The Rev. Sandra Stayner

The Rev. Sandra Stayner
August 27, 2017 Pentecost 12

I wonder how much our lives are really influenced or molded by the words and stories we find in scripture.

When I first decided to go to seminary it was not because I thought that I could become a priest because at that time I was living in England where women were not yet being ordained. I wanted to go to seminary because there were some words of Jesus that sounded so strange, so opposed to everything I had learned about surviving in this world that I wanted the opportunity to delve into scripture deeply enough to understand how these words might become real in my life. From the gospel of Matthew: ‘You have heard it said, “you must love your neighbors and hate your enemies but I say this to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Matthew. 5:43 or from Luke, “But I say this to those who are listening: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who treat you badly.” Luke 6:27-28

Kindness

Preachers like me have to keep our eyes open. You never know when an idea for a sermon will jump up and slap you in the face. The smart money has to stay alert. The rule I follow is one little Ray Andersen learned in Little League so many years ago and that is: “Three strikes and you’re out.”
